22ページ、"The Kernel" の8行目あたりにこういう文章がある。

Details of the system-call mechanism are given in Chapter 3, as are descriptions of several kernel mechanisms that do not execute as the direct result of a process doing a system call.

システムコールの詳細な仕組みについては、第3章で解説するが、【そこでは、プロセスが実行したシステムコールによる直接的な影響としてではなく行われる、いくつかのカーネル機能についても取り扱う】。

とりあえず、こう訳したが、恥ずかしながらこの "as are" がどういう意味で使われているのかさっぱりわからない。誰か教えてください。
